Causes of Female Urinary Incontinence

Although it is not regularly discussed by people, huge numbers of adult women suffer from female urinary incontinence. The chances are that at least a few of your female friends have experienced the symptoms of this medical issue. Whether women experience the need to pass urine and involuntarily release large amounts of fluid, or whether they only release a small dribble, the results can be both physically and emotionally problematic. Here are some of the leading causes of female urinary incontinence.
Weak Pelvic floor Musculature
If the musculature of the pelvic floor is too weak, the bladder outlet will not be able to withstand the pressures which are exerted onto it. Although the sufferer will be able to control themselves much of the time, if extra pressures are exerted on the abdomen (from laughing, sneezing, coughing, exercising etc) they may find that urine is released involuntarily. This type of urinary incontinence is most common in women who have had children.
Overactive bladder
When a woman has an overactive or unstable bladder, the bladder muscles contract too soon, and the woman experiences a sudden and urgent need to urinate. She may leak before she arrives at the toilet due to a reduction in the normal range of bladder control. There are a lot of different causes of this sort of incontinence, and if this type of incontinence appears suddenly, you are advised to contact a medical professional.
Urinary tract problems
If there is a problem in the urinary tract or anywhere else between the bladder and the urethra, there may be issues with the outflow of urine. This means that urine can sometime get trapped and the normal emptying process is not completed at the desired time. The trapped urine may exit the body at a later time as a small "leak". The sufferer will have no control over when the trapped urine will exit the body. This type of urinary incontinence can be caused by scar tissue blocking the urethra, swelling in the urinary system due to infections, the presence of tumors in the urinary system or kidney/bladder stones which may be passing. Although this type of incontinence is more common in men, it is still possible for women to suffer these issues.
In order to find out what type of urinary incontinence you may be suffering from, it is advisable to contact a medical professional. Although symptoms may seem like they are just a minor inconvenience, they may be related to a bigger problem.
